And so it ends. But wow, what a year it’s been. It’s had some ups and downs (mostly ups), it’s been both tough and easy, stressful and layback, but it certainly hasn’t been a doss year. In review, it may sound cliched but I really think that I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I want to do with myself. So, let’s look back at some of the highlights of the year. Here are my 5 favorite parts of Transition Year 2016:
5. Wesley Model United Nations.
So Model United Nations can maybe be best described as a large amount of teenagers pretending to be world leaders, speaking a lot but saying little. Everyone partaking has to represent a country assigned to them and argue for or against proposals based on what their country believes. Therefore, it's always the most fun to be North Korea, sarcastically arguing to replace every holiday with 'Glorious Leader Appreciation Day'.
4. CTYI Early University Entrance.
In the eternal words of Michael Douglas, ‘The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good.’ Such is the world of business, which I learned about every Tuesday in DCU. I took part of the Early University Entrance programme, in which TY students get a chance to, once a week, learn a university level course towards an exam at the end of the year. I was doing ‘Microeconomics’ and ‘Management Accounting For Decision Making’.
3. Grease.
Grease is the famous musical written in the 70’s, set in the 50’s, and has been teaching youths to change themselves to win the love of another for over 40 years! The plot of Grease is rather simple: A group of teenagers whine about each other for two and a half hours. Truly a modern classic!
2. YEOTY
So probably the best description of economics is the painful elaboration of the obvious. To say that ‘a higher price for a product will reduce the people buying it’ requires like 16 formulas in economics. Regardless, I entered this year’s Young Economist Of The Year with my friend Rian O’Mahoney, submitting a video on ‘Corruption In American Politics In The 21st Century’.
1. Munich.
Zufällige Wörter auf Deutsch! My trip to Munich, Germany mainly consisted of Christmas markets, traditional German malt wine and asking ‘do you speak English’ to people in English. We visited many famous attractions throughout the city, such as the Probylaea, the Glockenspiel and about 57 churches.
So those were my favorite events of TY. (Of course, the real #1 is seeing the midnight premiere of Star Wars 7, but that wasn’t a school event!) honourable mentions, go to Carlingford, the Dublin Zoo trip, my Gaisce, Kairos, and many more. I would really love to do it again, and my only regret is not doing more, as I really think that I would have enjoyed YSI, scuba diving, photography etc. I think that what I can learn going into 5th year is not to procrastinate. Often times it took me too long to get work done, and I need to knuckle down and finish it! Regardless, I loved Transition year; I would highly recommend it to anyone and honestly I can’t believe it’s over.
